WikiLeaks is an amazing, brave, and virtuous effort to expose classified information by providing a venue for sources to leak secret documents anonymously to be posted on wikileaks.org for the world to see.
While co-founder Julian Assange won’t be showing up in the United States anytime soon, at the advice of his lawyers, he is hinting at the huge release of documentation of an illegal, privacy invading spying program. He’s being guarded on the details for now – but read this article for more details.
Meanwhile – I’ll proudly add a WikiLeaks link to this blog.
(07.22.12 EDIT: Years down the road, Wikileaks sure seems like “controlled’ release of information. See this.)
September 2nd, 2009 – BP makes “Giant” Oil Discovery in Gulf
In this Bloomberg article, it is reported that BP will be able to increase production from the Gulf of Mexico by 50%.
The British producer last month bought additional acreage in the Lower Tertiary, or so-called Paleogene, region of the Gulf of Mexico. The 24 million-to 65 million-year-old formation, where both Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. are drilling wells, was previously thought to be unreachable. Tiber is the deepest exploration well ever drilled by the oil and gas industry, BP said.
March 18th, 2010 – Obama surrenders gulf oil to Moscow
The Washington Times reported that Obama was going to cede offshore drilling in the gulf to Russia since his administration was set to ban drilling at the same time Russia was moving to begin drilling off the coast of Cuba. Here are some excerpts from that report:
While the United States attempts to shift gears to alternative fuels to battle the purported evils of carbon emissions, Russia will erect oil derricks off the Cuban coast.
Russia is using oil exploration to establish a new presence in the Western Hemisphere. It recently concluded four contracts securing oil-exploration rights in Cuba’s economic zone in the Gulf of Mexico. A Russian-Cuban joint partnership will exploit oil found in the deep waters of the Gulf.
Cuba has rights to the area in which drilling will be conducted under an agreement the Carter administration recognized. From Russia’s perspective, this is another way to gain leverage inside what traditionally has been America’s sphere of influence. It may not be as dramatic as the Soviet Union attempting to use Cuba as a missile platform, but in the energy wars, the message is the same. Russia is projecting power into the Western Hemisphere while the United States retreats.
